A love in verse

Cotswolds

I came here in the car

Looking on the land

And thinking about trees.

And that they never mar

The scene nor make it bland

But ultimately please

They don’t command the field

Yet are essential to it

And also they’re like us

Against the world a shield

So calm and sense run through it

And there need be no fuss

But only at our best!
Else we’re Leylandii

Messing up the view

Violent and depressed

Making schisms in the sky

So darknesses accrue

Rather be serene

And to the world a way

Under sun and storm

Gracing earth and green-

Loving light of day

And when the shadows form

When you say to me “Let go”

And when I think it a monstrous pity...

About the centre of the small loo window

Leaves of every ivy-colour frame

The bold obtrusion of an autumn sun...
